South Place Hotel

Broadgate Circle has plenty of restaurants, bars and shops just minutes away, alongside everything the City and Shoreditch offer. It's an excellent high-end hotel in London's Liverpool St area. The room was very comfortable, with a great bed, good lighting, a minibar with good teabags, and a well-equipped bathroom. I also enjoyed the downstairs spaces, especially the fabulous cocktails at the bar and a delicious duck salad for lunch. Staff were helpful and professional throughout. My husband stayed on another occasion and rated it highly too. I took off one star over the checkout service charge. I was disappointed to find SPH had added an “optional” charge. I paid it, but would rather have the hotel include it in the advertised rates. Paying staff properly shouldn't be optional or depend on guests' generosity in a given month, and that responsibility shouldn't be shifted to guests.

Getting around London was easy from here, with Northern and District line stations close by. I always enjoy staying here, and the pancake breakfast is a real highlight. The staff are lovely and the service is great. A couple of little things in the room could be better: the touch controls aren't always obvious, and the shower over the bath can leave water on the floor outside it. The kettle and coffee machine share a plug that's a bit awkward to reach, so take care when plugging things in or unplugging them.

The team made the biggest impression on me, with warm, smiling service every day. South Place Hotel is also ideally placed: Liverpool Street station is just steps away, with easy connections across the city and to the suburbs. There are good restaurants in the hotel and more within walking distance, and the area works well for shopping and leisure too. My room was spacious and well appointed, and the Wi-Fi was good. It made for a comfortable base in London.

The hotel was fine when I stayed in 2022. I was happy with the room, the location, and the stay itself, but I’ve had a serious problem getting my deposit back. At check-in I was asked for £250, which seemed odd for a five-star hotel, though I agreed to it. My bank card wouldn’t work on the regular payment terminal, so staff brought one over from the restaurant and I paid there. Since leaving, I’ve tried several times to contact the hotel about a refund. I still haven’t received it, even after waiting patiently for all this time. That’s why I’m finally posting this. Future guests should be careful: they kept my deposit and haven’t returned the money.
