This was one of the worst hotel stays I've had. My first room had no working heating. I reported it and waited half an hour for a change, by then it was 11pm and I had an early meeting, so I was exhausted and just wanted to sleep. The replacement room had stained sheets. Then, while I was in the shower, a stranger entered because the same key card had been issued to another couple. I was exposed, panicked and horrified. I was later told the night staff were all new and had double-allocated rooms, but that doesn't excuse such a serious security failure. I was genuinely shaken by someone seeing me naked. They moved me again, this time to a suite as an apology, but the heating still didn't work. So many guests seemed to be getting moved around that it couldn't just be a coincidence. I tried to shower, but the water wouldn't drain, and the phone in the room called WOW SUITE wasn't working, so I couldn't ask for help. I had no time to deal with a room that wasn't functioning properly. I didn't fall asleep until 12:30am, stressed, cold and on edge after what should have been a simple overnight stay. The place felt poorly managed, unsafe and unreliable, with broken rooms, dirty bedding and staff who seemed unable to handle the situation. Guest safety and wellbeing seemed disregarded. I'd never stay again, and I'd warn others to think twice, especially if privacy, security or sleep matter to you.

The staff were incredible, apologetic and went above and beyond to make our stay magical and memorable. They offered a resolution for the problems. The hotel is in an ideal location for our trip, around a 10-minute tube ride from kings cross, with most amenities within walking distance. The room, though, was outdated, with non-smart TVs, too few sockets and poor upkeep. The bathroom wasn't clean, and the outlook was scruffy, which added to the poor hygiene.

For the price, this was a really pleasant stay, and I’d definitely come back. I was there for two days; the room was very clean and had useful extras like tea, coffee and flipflops. The two young women at reception were especially helpful, and all the staff were friendly. I’ve never had such a nice experience in a London hotel before.

Being unable to get back into my room after a long day was bad enough. The security staff refused to help or properly check my reservation, even after I showed my booking details and explained what had happened. They treated me with suspicion, as if I didn’t belong there, and were rude and dismissive instead of showing basic courtesy. It was humiliating to be locked out of a room I was paying for while the people responsible for helping guests wouldn’t believe me. A hotel should make people feel welcome and safe, not distressed and alienated. My visit, which should have been comfortable and enjoyable, became a stressful ordeal. For a hotel that presents itself as luxury, this security service is unacceptable. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share how shockingly poor the experience was. The Montcalm needs serious improvement in staff training and guest relations before I could recommend it. Awful experience.
