Breakfast was lovely, and even though it was chucking it down, we had a nice view of the river. The Temple Room was a good size, comfortable and well appointed. Bathroom lighting met my wife’s makeup standards, and the shower was decent. Our only small gripe was that the bed felt a little narrow and squishy at the edges. There was ample parking, and check-in at reception was friendly and seamless. We also enjoyed the bar, where a capable, engaging barman suggested drinks and made us perfect cocktails. The hotel was easy to reach, with local restaurants just a short walk away.

The Floating Spa was a standout: a peaceful wellness space gently rocking on the river, with immersive, restorative treatments. The Monkey Island Brasserie served excellent refined British food in a relaxed setting, and afternoon tea was a highlight. For a pre-dinner drink, Monkey Bar had creative cocktails and attentive service. The estate sits on its own private island on the River Thames, just outside London, and feels wonderfully calm, with manicured gardens, riverside paths and idyllic views. Its restored historic buildings, including the Monkey Room with its ornate 18th-century ceiling, give the place a distinctive character. The rooms and suites are stylish, comfortable and thoughtfully designed. Some of the more affordable rooms may feel compact, while suites such as the Wedgwood Suite offer a memorable, indulgent stay. Service was warm, polished and genuinely hospitable, with thoughtful touches throughout. A few guests report minor inconsistencies, but the overall standard is very high. Monkey Island Estate in Bray blends its centuries of history with contemporary elegance for a tranquil, relaxing retreat.

The staff made our six-night stay feel special from the moment we arrived. They were warm, professional and genuinely kind, and nothing was too much trouble. It reminded us of what hotels were like 25 years ago. The grounds were beautiful for relaxing or exploring, and the restaurant and bar had a lovely atmosphere and great service. We stayed in Sundial Cottage while visiting family. It’s a beautiful three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath retreat with a spacious garden, perfect for a peaceful break. I also loved learning that Sylvia Anderson, co-creator of Thunderbirds, originally owned the cottage. I’d loved that show as a kid, so the connection was an unexpected bit of nostalgia. We had a wonderful time from start to finish and will definitely be back. Highly recommended.

Our private Christmas lunch for 12 was served in a lovely room off the main bar, with a really nice ambience and a beautifully dressed table. The food was first class, and the friendly, professional staff gave us very high-standard service. Pre-selected Christmas menus are often disappointing, but Monkey Island got it right. Hopefully we’ll be back next Christmas.

The floating spa was unusual, and the treatments were good. Bray village is so close, with lots of great restaurants nearby. It’s good value for money, and I really enjoyed my night away. A quiet, beautiful place with a nice restaurant, perfect for unwinding and chilling out.
