The bathroom had mildew in the shower, a loose sink, holes punched into the walls and a cold tap that ran warm. The door was hanging off and had no lock. The front door and bathroom door both had gaps, so people in the hall could see into the room and bathroom. There were holes in the walls and tiles, and the room was like an oven even though the rest of the building and outside were cool. The windows were wired so they only opened a few inches. The place smelled rank. There was no safety poster or information about fire escapes or fire procedures. I tried to complain twice, but reception was closed both times.

The staff were really nice, and the room was okay for the night. It seemed geared toward football crowds and groups. We paid £200 for a room for four, and it was a good 20-minute walk to the edge of the city centre.

I opened the kettle to boil water for tea and was hit by such a bad smell I felt sick. I just want my money back.

The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and the small room was okay. But the house smelled and felt run-down, and we didn't feel safe at all as two girls in that very multicultural, crime-ridden neighborhood. We wouldn't stay here again.

For one night out in the Toon, this did the job, and the price was good. The person checking me in was genuinely friendly, and the room was okay, cleaner than a Travelodge I'd stayed in in London. I wouldn't choose it for a longer holiday. Is it the best hotel I've stayed in? Definitely not, but it worked fine for a night.
