Mercure Newcastle George Washington Golf & Spa

We booked a room for our anniversary and have loved it so far. The room is stunning, the bathrooms are amazing, and the evening meal was beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing how the sleep, pool and breakfast are. Thanks as well for the food service. The noise was difficult for me because of my autism, and they couldn’t have been more accommodating. Thank you Kim, Gabby, Lili and Matty.

The food at our 90th birthday event was outstanding, and the event planner had been very helpful with the preparations. But the day itself was disappointing and affected both the celebration and our family visit. There was no contact person to help when problems came up. The room was very cold at first, and welcome drinks only arrived after most guests were there. We were told music couldn’t start until 3 p.m., the official event time, even though guests had arrived earlier and some atmosphere was needed. We were also given a butter knife to cut the cake. Other parts of the stay fell short too. Several staff members seemed unfriendly and unhelpful, and they didn’t know basic details like the spa opening hours, which caused confusion. The area around the pool was dirty, the sauna wasn’t working, and the Jacuzzi wasn’t very clean and had missing tiles, raising hygiene and safety concerns. Our room was clean, but the towel hanger was broken and hanging off the wall, and a wall sconce was loose. These should have been fixed before we arrived. Breakfast was disorganized. Many hot buffet items were missing, refills took a considerable time, and only one coffee machine was working, so queues and delays built up. Given how important the occasion was and the hotel’s reputation, all of this was extremely disheartening.

Our family has eaten here for various events before, and the Boxing Day family lunch was very good from start to finish. Jasmine and Molly were attentive and professional, and nothing was too much trouble. The food was very nice and good value for a festive meal, with generous portions and a nice presentation. Based on this visit, we’d definitely come back. Thank you.

Mimi made evening dinner a pleasure with her brilliant hospitality and customer service. No matter how tough and physical my workday had been, she was there to make the evening easy, smooth and relaxing. She was always busy, but still had time for a laugh. Thanks so much, Mimi. She might even be better than Patrick ;)
