Wensum Valley Hotel Golf Country Club

The bedrooms weren’t ready, and nobody could hear the wedding ceremony because there were no microphones. The extra-cost aisle carpet was crooked and looked like a leftover bit from a garage. Staff were disorganised and hard to approach, while the food servers looked miserable and practically threw plates down. The food was awful, especially for £70 per head. With just one person working the bar, drinks were slow to get. I was there as a family member, and it’s a day I’ll remember for all the wrong reasons. Wouldn’t recommend.

A handy place for anyone going to watch the student cup at east Anglia university. It’s a great spot, not far from the city centre, with nice rooms and good amenities. Much better than a travel lodge.

The staff were pleasant and worked hard, and the restaurant meals were very nice and well presented. We had a golf weekend with a society; the courses were in reasonable shape, though the greens played quite slowly. The rooms were nicely fitted out, with comfortable beds. The bar had a good selection, but prices were a little high. All in all, a great weekend.

The golf shop guys were great, and the pool area was tired but did the job. There are nice things here, but attention to detail needs work. Our room wasn’t ready at check-in, and the bathroom was filthy, the bins full and the carpet unvacuumed, though they eventually sorted it out. The room also seemed to be mid-renovation. That may be necessary, but charging the full rate felt a bit naughty. Staff were a mixed bag, some great, others acting as if we were an inconvenience. The outside areas need some care too. Our lunch sandwiches were good, but the salad was past its best. It won’t be five-star, but getting the small things right could build enough goodwill to make the bigger issues easier to overlook.
