The man I took to be the restaurant manager went out of his way to help us. Our nearly refurbished room was warm and comfortable, but its door was awkward to open and close. Beds were comfy, there was plenty of parking, and we didn’t hear the work going on, though we stayed at the weekend. There’s a decent pub across the road with cheap drinks; the food can be hit or miss, but we preferred it to what the hotel served. The location is good too. The service from other staff didn’t feel very helpful, and some seemed as if they didn’t want to be there. We were told the restaurant would close and staff would be made redundant. On one night, the person I assume was the restaurant manager had to tell staff several times, in front of us, to work and serve customers. Our promotional breakfast wasn’t good and wouldn’t have been worth its usual price. We heard a lot of noise from rooms above and below. The corridors and stairs were freezing, and the bathroom fan and heating were noisy. The towels had holes, and we were given just one bath towel for two people over two nights, though we got more when we asked. The bar, which is closing, only opened at 5pm, and there’s no vending machine. Sainsbury’s and a pub are across the road, but we like having a drink when we arrive. If you want something overnight or early in the morning, bring it yourself; even soft drinks aren’t available at the bar then.
