The balcony room had an incredible view, and the staff were super nice, even offering us another room after our awful first night. Sadly, the replacement mattress was no better, with loads of springs you could feel. We booked four nights in February after reading the good reviews, but I wouldn't stay again. It would be lovely if the hotel replaced the mattresses soon.

I've been twice for a hot drink or something to eat, and I'll come back. It's a blissful place, with the fire crackling, kids running back and forth over the sofas, and people settled in comfy chairs working on laptops. Nobody was rushed to order, even though it was full. Outside, the storm battered the huge windows while a happy, soaked visitor fed the cows and goats. The staff are lovely, the burger was great, and my friend wolfed down her fish and chips.

The view from Loch Melfort Hotel amazes me every time, even when the weather's poor. We've visited for years, and on this visit we stayed overnight and had dinner. The people and service were lovely, attentive, and helpful. The lodge rooms are very comfortable, with outdoor seating on the balcony for sunny weather. A great place for a getaway.

We waited an hour for food, and when we raised it, the young waiter just said it was on its way. The food was nice when it finally arrived, but far too expensive for what we got. Our 8.15pm table booking turned into a departure after 10.30pm, which made for a long drive home to Glasgow. It felt as if hotel guests were prioritized: two tables seated after us got window seats and their food first. We'd called ahead and asked for a window, but were told those seats couldn't be reserved, then were refused one of the two empty window tables when we arrived, and told they were reserved. The menu was rather overpriced, and the staff weren't as friendly as you'd expect in such a prime Scottish location. I don't mind paying a premium for good food and a lovely view, but they need to get the basics right or bring prices closer to the standard.
