George Street Hotel

The rooms are tiny and dated, and with luggage there's barely room to move. There aren't any lamps, just overhead lighting and odd reading lights that may or may not work. The rooms are close together too, we could hear our neighbour talking. I don't understand the five-star listing. There's no lobby, view, restaurant, or bar, and you enter through a strange door that feels like an old speakeasy. It's central, but at best this is a three-star property. If that's what you're expecting, fine. If you think you're booking five stars, beware of the misleading claims. We could have done better.

We had a deluxe double on the second floor facing Georg Street. The hotel is well placed, has a lift to all floors, and the staff were helpful and friendly. I'd recommend it, despite not sleeping well. When we got back around 10:30pm, there seemed to be a group of students staying there, and some were worse for wear. They were loud for a few hours, as if they were partying.

It's a relief to find an affordable hotel in central Oxford that's still good quality. Until now, it felt like the choices were pricey high-end places or quaint but scruffy inns and hostels, with hardly anything in between. It's run by a local family who seem keen to keep their guests happy. :)

Sam and Davina were so friendly. Sam let me check in early so I could rest and freshen up after a long day of travel, and Davina gave me lovely recommendations that have me looking forward to a future visit. I stayed one night at the George Street Hotel, right in the heart of Oxford City Centre. It was so convenient to walk downstairs to all the famous spots and come back to drop things off or rest whenever I wanted. It was just what I was looking for, and I can't wait to return.
