We’d happily stay here again. The staff were friendly and helpful, and they let us leave our bags after checkout to collect later. Our room was quiet and comfortable, tucked right up under the eaves. Breakfast was fine once we’d figured out where everything was, though the cooked food, despite tasting lovely, was barely warm. Getting into central Oxford on foot was easy, with lots of quiet back lanes along the way. The worst part was a dreadful smell throughout reception and the stairwell. Thankfully it wasn’t in the dining room, and our top-floor bedroom was fine. I can’t say whether it reaches the lower rooms.
Breakfast was very good, and the room was clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished. The bathroom was small, though that’s understandable in a traditional building. At check-in, a smart, friendly young man welcomed us, and the main reception looked beautiful with its Christmas decorations. Dinner was the letdown. Our stay included a meal, but we were told the dining room was fully booked. We had to insist that we were entitled to eat, and were eventually seated at a draughty table outside the main dining area. The promised two-course festive meal wasn’t available either. Instead, we were offered something from a rather basic menu. It was nice enough, just not what we’d expected. Overall, a good stay spoiled by the dinner arrangements.
The rooms were neat and clean, and my friends were happy with the service too. The bathroom was spacious, which was nice. The hotel is at the far end from the centre, so we had to walk all the way back. There were plenty of nice shops and places to eat. I wasn’t keen on the many pictures of people on the bedroom walls, though. Having all those photos there felt weird when I was trying to sleep.
The student atmosphere around here is one of my favourite things. Several University of Oxford buildings are a short walk away, and the area always feels lively and creative. The hotel is also handy for anyone coming from Heathrow or Gatwick, since the airport bus stops only a few metres away. It’s easy to roll your suitcase straight over to the lobby. I’ve stayed here before, and the elegant lobby feels welcoming while the restaurant is cosy and intimate. Breakfast is a treat by UK standards, with lots of choice and great coffee. My room in the main building was on the small side but comfortable and well kept. Rooms at the back are a little more spacious if you can get one. Book early if possible. I left it until the last minute and saw the price climb quickly. It’s still cheaper than many places nearby, but planning ahead gets you better value.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and breakfast had a good choice. Our room was clean, but maintenance was an issue: the only bedside lamp was missing both its bulb and bulb holder, leaving electrical contacts visible that looked like they could be live. Our neighbours came back late and started partying. The night manager was helpful and let us move to another room.
