The staff were friendly and check-in was seamless, but I left disappointed despite having an enjoyable evening with my partner. The lounge included with our room’s price, advertised as an exclusive 'club' lounge, was soulless, brighter than a Solar Nebula, and completely unstaffed. We sat there parched while waiting for our restaurant table. We paid £154 for the night, so the £15 underground parking felt extreme. If you have a big modern vehicle, one of those SUVs with its own postcode, you may want to park elsewhere or check your insurance excess. The pillars, posts and ceilings are marked with paint from previous incidents. The room was cold when we arrived, but we soon got the in-room heater going. The King premium room didn’t have a Kingsize bed. Instead, there were two smaller beds pushed together, each with a different thickness, leaving a crevasse we spent the night trying to avoid. If a King bed is advertised and expected, that’s what should be provided, no excuses. The room could use some TLC too: the door stop was broken and the carpet stained in places.
The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and had everything we needed, though the hotel doesn’t look like much from outside. Inside is the total opposite. The restaurant on the top floor is a marco Pierre white. The menu looked great, but we didn’t eat there. Breakfast is in the restaurant, with views over the sea and park. It’s a great spot, with a lovely park to explore, good views from the front of the hotel, and the waterfront right there. The station is a 15 minute walk away. There’s a pool, sauna, steam room and gym, all open to the public as well as hotel guests. I didn’t use the gym, but the pool was big enough to swim in even when it was busy. The underground car park is extremely tight. There are larger spaces for taller vehicles, with lower ceilings in the smaller ones, which is a good feature. Unfortunately, some small cars park in those larger spots and make things difficult for everyone else. Not everyone parks properly, either. That’s my only criticism, and it’s aimed more at incompetent drivers than the hotel. Otherwise, it was excellent and I couldn’t fault it.
The concierge were genuinely polite and considerate, not just going through the motions like so often happens. The main areas were cosy, modern and nice, and we loved the hotel. We came for three nights with my wife and two young children. Our spacious room was modern and very clean. The pool was warm, the steam room nice and hot, and the gym was okay for a hotel. Underground parking was included and there was space, though it was a bit tight getting in and out. The only downside in the room was no heated bathroom towel hanger, which made dealing with wet towels a bit of a problem.
The location is perfect, with a great view and good facilities. Mike, who looks after the lounge, was a perfect host for relaxing, knowledgeable, fun and friendly. Daniel at the penthouse restaurant was amazing too. The hotel rooms could use a bit more refurbishing, but apart from that we had a very good stay. I’ll definitely recommend the place and the staff.
We paid around £90 in low season and liked our stay. The breakfast was outstanding, one of the best I’ve had at a hotel, with plenty of good quality hot and cold options and nice service. It’s a really good location, within walking distance of the city centre, with the hoe on the doorstep and the barbican about five minutes away. Parking costs £15, which feels expensive for a hotel guest. The shower was poor, with very low pressure, and there was no shower gel in the container. At double the price I’ve already seen online, I’m not sure I’d stay, but for what we paid it was nice and good value.
