The room can get pretty loud since there aren't many soft surfaces to absorb sound, especially when a couple of people are talking loudly. Still, we kept talking about the starters the next day, which hardly ever happens. The gambas, mackerel, feta and salmon were memorable, and the mains were just as nicely cooked and presented. Bream, lamb and tagine all had lovely depth of flavour. The pea risotto was a little soupy. The restaurant's setting in a beautifully located hotel and its reputation had given us high expectations, and the food itself was excellent, with a nice presentation too.

The ham sandwiches were especially good, and the staff were friendly with good service. My friend and I had booked afternoon tea, but the restaurant was so empty that it didn't have much atmosphere. The scones and cakes and other sweets were a letdown, though, with very little taste and clearly not fresh.

The Wingrove has a really pleasant atmosphere, and the staff are attentive and smiley. I've been for food and drinks, most recently Christmas lunch, and the food was excellent. Highly recommend.

The private dining room was a lovely place for our group to eat on the first night. The food was spectacular, especially the lamb, which I'll remember, and the white chocolate mousse. We found the rooms immaculate, with a coffee maker and tea area, though a few more hangers and bathroom hooks for towels would have helped. Staff were friendly and accommodating, and breakfast was delicious. They can add or remove items without fuss, though the continental selection is limited. Gluten-free and vegan choices are available if you ask. For a stay, the hotel has an elegant colonial style, with modern comforts and period features, in the historic village of Alfriston, in the South Downs National Park. I'd recommend booking early and choosing a room with veranda access for lovely views over the gardens and the National Park. It's close to the sea, a vineyard, and the village shops and restaurants, all of which are wonderful. There's a guests-only car park at the back on a first-come, first-served basis. We found enough space and had no trouble parking. If you're planning to stay out late, remember to take a front door key, as the doors are locked at 10pm. A beautiful place to relax and enjoy a stay. Highly recommend.

The Lodge is a lovely place for our group to meet, and the rooms are tastefully decorated and very comfortable. We also enjoy the breakfasts, with lots of choices and decent coffee. This was my third time bringing a group to the Wingrove for an intensive Virginia Woolf literary study. We love the hotel's location and feel very much at home there, and the staff have always been accommodating. On our latest trip, one of our group sadly tested positive for Covid, and management was incredibly helpful and accommodating, even though it meant changing some plans. Thanks to all the staff. We look forward to returning to the Wingrove with the London Literary Salon.
