Chestnuts Bed & Breakfast

We’re visiting from Canada, and our stay at Wingrove House was a real highlight. The meals looked like works of art and tasted just as good. Our room was fantastic, with a very comfortable bed and a balcony just off the hall with stunning views. The grounds and yards were immaculately kept, and the staff were friendly and accommodating the whole time. A must if you’re in the area.

We only stopped in for lunch because parking was impossible elsewhere in the beautiful, busy village of Alfriston, but the Wingrove had spaces for customers. Glad we gave it a try. The food was superb, especially the house burger, and the fish and chips were brilliant too. The server was on her own because a colleague had gone sick, and she was brilliant. A five star experience all round.

Cathy and her team made it easy to imagine staying longer than the four days we had. The room and dining room were both perfect, and nothing seemed too much trouble. That was a real relief while I was dealing with some health issues. Thanks again, everyone.

The starters stayed on our minds even the next day, which doesn’t happen often. We had gambas, mackerel, feta and salmon, and they were excellent, beautifully presented too. The mains were just as well prepared: bream, lamb and tagine all had wonderfully deep flavours. The pea risotto was a bit soupy. The restaurant’s lovely setting in a well-situated hotel, plus its reputation, had us expecting a lot, and the food delivered. One thing to know is that the room has few soft surfaces to absorb sound, so it gets loud, especially with a couple of loud talkers.
