We understand the no ID, no drink rule, and I was fine with my 29-year-old sister not being served when she had no ID on her. I'm 24 and showed valid ID. What made the visit so weird and unnecessarily intense was being told that if she took even one sip of my beer, “there would be hell on.” It could've been a simple, calm explanation that sharing wasn't allowed, instead of sounding like the police were about to be summoned.

The area felt safe, and it was only a five minute walk into the town centre. Staff were warm, friendly and helpful, and the price was good with no real complaints. The rooms and bar were a bit rough and ready, but they suited me for a few nights. Breakfast was good and hearty, though there wasn't a choice of yoghurts. I'd recommend it for solo travel or somewhere to get your head down on a short stay.

We were on the top floor, with a great view of the castle and away from the bar. The room was okay and did the job as a place to sleep before a really nice breakfast. It's a proper pub-based B&B, so you know what you're getting. The staff were all very polite and helpful.

The owners were very pleasant and went out of their way to help when I stopped here one Monday evening. The pub is in a lovely location, and the clean room came with body wash, shampoo, conditioner and the usual tea and coffee. Breakfast was excellent. They even had parking discs so I could leave the car on the roadside outside. One of the best places I've stayed while travelling around the UK.

It's a great location, with really friendly staff. Cheap and cheerful, and it worked perfectly for what we needed. Just don't expect Hilton standards when you're not paying Hilton prices.
