George Wright Boutique Hotel

I’ve stayed here several times and have always been happy. This visit we got a free upgrade, which was a nice surprise. The spacious room had a large king-size bed, a very comfortable mattress and a big bathtub. This room didn’t have Netflix, unlike the others I’ve stayed in, but it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t affect what was otherwise a great stay.

The people running this place made our stay special. They were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is right in the middle of town, and the rooms were warm and very nice. Definitely a great place to stay!

We felt uneasy and unsafe, so we left a day early instead of staying the two nights we’d booked. The fire exit door, which guests were meant to use for 24/7 access, was broken and wouldn’t shut. We could hear people having sex around 3am and again around 8am. I don’t begrudge people having a good time, but you can hear everything. We also noticed a strip club right outside when we checked out. The place felt more like a brothel than a boutique. We’d chosen the hotel because its website looked lovely and it had a level 5 food hygiene rating. That was where the good ended. We arrived to find no one in the restaurant at 6pm, and we were the only guests there. The man at the desk seemed nice. We told him we’d be out for the night and back around 2am, and he explained the 24/7 access and gave us a key for the door. Room 2 wasn’t what we expected. The sink and dressing table were cracked, there was mould in the shower area, and the room was freezing. The room door wouldn’t close unless we pushed it by hand, while the bathroom door slammed heavily. Surely the room door should be the fire door, not the bathroom one?

The place was great. The owners were lovely, and it’s nice and central, with everything 20 minutes away. There’s a bar, food and late night access. I asked for an iron and it arrived in less than five minutes. Asked for a bottle of drinking water, and boom, it was there. Checkout at 11am meant no rush. The Crucible is 20 minutes away too. We’ll definitely be back. Love it.
