The fireplace at the centre of the restaurant gives the room a lovely glow and a close, cosy feel, especially on a cold evening. It’s a lovely place to linger over dinner or a glass of wine with good company. The restaurant at The Tunbridge Wells Hotel also has attentive service and beautifully presented dishes. Soft lighting, elegant details and classic decor give it a warm, homely atmosphere where you can relax as soon as you arrive.

The location is perfect, and the historic building has real character. I also liked having a proper bar on the ground floor and the breakfast was very good. Just be ready for the stairs and that cosy pub feel, since reception is at the bar.

The location is great, but so much about this place lets the historic building down. The service and rooms were crap, and the rooms advertised didn’t match what we paid for. It’s shockingly overpriced tat. I’d put the value at about £40 with breakfast. Pay any more and you’ve wasted your money. Find somewhere else if you want to avoid disappointment.

I only stopped in after work for a cocktail, but it was a calm, happy atmosphere and the staff were friendly and funny. Working in catering can be stressful, yet they always seem positive whatever the covers. The bar manager had a great character. I asked for an espresso martini and let them decide how to make it. It was lovely, couldn’t fault it. Thanks, guys and girls.

The room hadn’t been cleaned properly before we got in. There was another guest’s hair spray bottle behind an armchair, and the en suite toilet kept emptying after a flush unless you pushed the lever back up. With no air conditioning, a table fan had to run constantly. This was meant to be a superior room. Getting to room 51 meant climbing 67 steps over five flights of narrow stairs every time. The bed was a small, 4ft wide sleigh style double, completely impractical for anyone over 6ft. I know the hotel is in an old building, but we paid £160 for a Saturday night booked in advance. For less, we’d have had better facilities and a comfier stay at a Premier Inn.
