The Runmere Hotel

The room was basic, just a bed, TV, desk and somewhere to hang clothes, so it’s not for anyone after a 5-star hotel. Still, we had a decent night’s sleep and it was very quiet. Breakfast had cooked-to-order food as well as cereal, juice and croissants, enough to get the day started. Asking for a ground-floor room at check-in was no problem.

I travel for work and stay in lots of hotels, but this was by far the most disgusting one I’ve been in. I saw a rat in the doorway and left on day three of a five-day stay. They also charged me for an extra week after telling me they wouldn’t. The bed seemed at least 20 years old, had no springs left, and the room stank of bad body odour. Absolute shambles and must be unhealthy. I found three of these on the floor during my 2.5-day stay. I’d rather stay in east Ukraine than come back.

The bar and restaurant were pristine, with a decent range of drinks, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a freshly made pizza that tasted really good. The rooms are basic and not much to look at, but very clean, with towels, shower gel, tea and coffee. It does the job for what it is, and I’ve no complaints.

The rooms were clean and basic, and booking direct included free breakfast. It was good value, but the mattress was so cheap and uncomfortable that we didn’t sleep well. I’d have rated it 4 otherwise.
