Ardgowan Hotel

The bed was comfortable, the room spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful, so we had a fine stay. Just be aware there’s no lift, as the hotel website says, which could be a problem for anyone with mobility limitations or who isn’t comfortable with stairs. Breakfast was disappointing, particularly my Eggs Benedict: the eggs were boiled rather than poached, and the meal felt very basic. For what we paid for one night, I didn’t think it was great value.

We left after one night without sleeping much. A seagull nest above the room kept the birds calling all night, then housekeeping started in the room next door at 8am with a blaring radio and loud voices. The room itself was tiny, with no air conditioning, a window that wouldn’t close, a full-size bed that wasn’t adequate for two, and poor pillows. There was no water, fridge, or outlets. I was told it was on the second floor, but it was actually on the fifth, and there’s no lift. The front desk clerk couldn’t tell me where to park or even where the room was. When we checked out early, nobody asked why, tried to improve things, or offered to refund the $300 quid for the unused night. We went to the French hotel next door and had an amazing stay. I travel for a living, and this was the worst place I’ve ever stayed.

The Scottish breakfast really spoiled things this time. All three we ordered were poor: dry bacon, a rubbery potato scone, cheap beans, stale bread, and a lukewarm link sausage. I’ve stayed at the Ardgowan several times before and breakfast used to be one of its strong points, so maybe they’re cutting back to save money. I don’t think I’d return. There were four of us on a golf weekend, staying two nights from Friday 15th March 2024. Check-in was handled well and we got a pleasant welcome. The rooms were clean and pleasant, though a little small. The hotel’s very well located, close to everything in St Andrews centre and the golf courses.

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the location is ideal for St Andrews. Breakfast was a bit underwhelming: the eggs had no taste, though the salmon was nice, and a proper coffee machine would be welcome. Getting in and out of the store room was a bit of a faff too, and could be improved. Still, I’d happily stay again.
