We went in twice for dinner while on holiday and phoned ahead to book a table each time. The food was freshly cooked, tasty, served quickly and came in generous portions. Staff were very friendly and efficient. One confusing detail: the pub restaurant appears on Google Maps as The Screes Inn, but it's actually at The Strand Hotel directly opposite. We figured it out easily, so it wasn't a problem. We only ate there, so I can't comment on the rooms. This needs updating.

We only stayed for a long weekend, but we're already planning another trip. The place has quality beer brewed on site, great food, a good location, friendly locals, plenty of parking and attentive staff. There's a gin still on site as well, and a huge smoker that's going to make a winning combination even better.

After going around Wasdale, we had dinner here. The steak pie is simply the best I've had, and I love their own gin too.

We were there on Friday 24th with our dogs. The pub says outside that it's dog friendly, but that wasn't how things turned out. We'd been there for about an hour and a half without any trouble. We were spending £20-£30 per round as a family memorial for our son and friend, celebrating his birthday. This was the last place we were all together before he tragically lost his life. Then the manager came down out of the blue and told us to get the dog off the seat. The bar staff collecting glasses hadn't said anything, and had actually commented on how pleasant the dogs were. When we asked why he was making an issue of it, he told us we were barred, then took out his phone and started photographing us. That was totally unacceptable. He couldn't explain why he'd suddenly got his knickers in a twist. He just put his hands on his hips and pranced around like a fool, trying to stare out Lee's only woman and mother. Childish behaviour. It's such a shame. This pub could be a much better place to enjoy a drink without that extremely rude person, and it's a shame for the rest of the bar staff.

I stayed here with my son and grandson while we climbed Scafell Pike. The room was very comfortable, the thick white towels were lovely, and the bedding was really good quality. We enjoyed the food and had a really good stay.
