Holiday Inn Express Shrewsbury

Check-in was smooth, the room was comfortable, and the price was good. Breakfast was a major disappointment, though. At check-in we were told Saturday breakfast ran until 10:30, and the sign said it was served until 10:30 on weekends. We went down at 10:10 and found almost nothing left. The staff member said the kitchen closed at 10:00, so there'd be no more food. There were no eggs, beans, tomatoes, croissants or muffins, just dried-out bacon and a few sausages.

I visited on 29th Jan 26, and after staying at many HI hotels, including express, this was the worst so far for what I paid. Breakfast was poor: cold food, cardboard-like bacon, overcooked sausages and undercooked hash browns. The coffee was great, at least. Staff were friendly enough, but the hotel needs a refurbishment before charging what it does. I'm unlikely to book again. In the room, the floor had a badly repaired crack, the toilet was not very clean and its flush button stuck. Fixtures and fittings looked very dated. The kettle kept switching off before the water boiled, the carpet was dirty and the pillows felt like bricks. I know pillows are personal preference, but I woke with a neck ache. Other guests were very inconsiderate, having loud conversations in the corridor at 2am. The hotel accepts dogs, but there should be specific rooms for them.

This was my second work trip stay here, travelling alone as a woman. It's in a quiet area with free parking, around a 10 minute drive from the train station and Shrewsbury town. The hotel felt welcoming and clean, and all the staff I've met have been friendly and helpful. One noticed me trying to solve a Rubik's cube and offered to teach me 😅 The rooms are large, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Food is available at convenient times, 6pm-9:30pm and 6:30am-9:30am. The menu is basic, but the standard is good. I'll probably be visiting regularly and would stay here again.

The hotel and rooms were clean and comfortable, and the big bed had plenty of soft, fresh-smelling pillows. Staff were helpful and polite. Breakfast was the letdown. We arrived at 8.45 and found very little besides the hot food. There was no fresh yoghurt or Weetabix. They were apparently waiting for a delivery that hadn't arrived.
