The food was the star here, and the staff were so friendly and helpful during service. It felt like a proper local, family-run place, decorated with history from the area, and we ate in a lovely setting. Everything we tried was packed with flavour: the Cullen skink, the thick-gravy lamb stew, the juicy sirloin, the steak pie with its fresh crust, and the chef’s chicken. The seafood bisque with cheesy garlic croutons was class too. So was the hand-pulled man ahoy. The produce is locally sourced and the cooking has real heart. Top marks for a hearty Scottish meal at a good price. Now I just need to stay a couple of nights there. Cheers!

We had a great overnight stay after getting a Christmas voucher. We’d never heard of the Black Bull before. The staff welcomed us warmly, and a young man explained everything when we arrived. The same young woman served us dinner and breakfast, and she was attentive and friendly. The food was high quality, and we really enjoyed both meals. There isn’t much else to do in Gartmore, which was actually part of the appeal. Before heading home for food and drinks, we went for a big forest walk at Fairy Knowes. Fab stay, thanks!

The Black Bull is a lovely dog-friendly village pub, and our chocolate Labrador ended up asleep beside the big log burner in the main room. The place is beautifully cared for, right down to the spotless, well-decorated toilets. Its community ownership after the local buyout gives it a special charm, and it’s great to see the village hub thriving. We had Cullen skink, rich and comforting with a warm home-baked roll and butter. The smoked salmon starter came in thick slices with crisp fresh salad and a hand-cut lemon wedge. The skinny fries were generous, crunchy outside and fluffy inside. Everything tasted fresh and was served in good portions. There’s a thoughtful range for vegans and vegetarians too, and next time we’d like to try the tofu, cauliflower and cashew stew, as well as the steak and ale pie. The staff made us feel welcome straight away. Drinks include draft beers, ales, spirits, espresso coffee and wines, and the new cask ales are particularly tasty. Warm, stylish decor and excellent food made this a memorable visit. We can’t wait to go back.

I stayed while working around Scotland and found a fantastic little village pub and hotel. The rooms were comfortable and really quiet, and the food and service were great. Friendly locals welcomed us, and eating by the log fire made for a lovely atmosphere. I’d definitely stay again when I’m working nearby.

Such a cosy, lovely pub, with awesome food. That Drambuie sauce was the best, and I made sure to tell the chef. Portions were just right, and everyone was friendly and helpful. Keep it up, I’ll be back soon! 🫶
