The Royal Hotel Stromness

The bedrooms at The Royal Hotel have been fully refurbished to a very high standard, and the ferry is just across the way. Breakfast was delicious, and the full Scottish is well worth trying, so compliments to the chef. Reception and breakfast staff were very friendly and obliging. It's an ideal base for travelling around the island.

The breakfasts were amazing, the room was very comfortable, and the staff were just lovely. We had a lovely stay at The Royal Hotel. It's well placed for many visitor attractions on the mainland, and there's a good bus service to and from Kirkwall. Thoroughly recommend it if you're planning a trip to Stromness.

The high street location is great, though parking takes a bit of luck, as we found. Our room was large, comfortable and clean, and there's a pub attached downstairs. We had a good chat there with the charming proprietor, who's knowledgeable about all things Orkney, including local sailing, plus fun subjects like 90s era Jaguars and the various music festivals that come through town.

The room was comfy and had a nice view of the church, but the hot water in the sink only trickled. There was no Wi-Fi in my top-floor room, clearly a blind spot, and no one cared. In this day and age, that's unacceptable.
