Mercure Swansea

The breakfast had plenty of choice, and the room was quiet at the back of the hotel. The bed was comfortable, not rock hard like some Mercure beds, though the room itself felt dated. The carpets need replacing, and the bedrooms could do with being brought up to the standard of the lounge and dining room. The huge sliding windows also don’t have a safety limit, which could be a worry for anyone staying with children. You can hear people walking along the corridor, too. Outside, it looks a bit like a Crossroads motel, if you’re old enough to remember that. Inside, though, it’s modern and there’s a warm fire. The staff were lovely and helpful, and getting Welsh cakes when we arrived was a nice welcome after a long journey. Dinner is pricey, £34 for a sirloin steak. The gym has three treadmills, two rowing machines, a stepper, several weight machines and free weights. Ask reception for a key card to get in. The pool is closed because of Covid, which seems common. I think more hotels would get bookings from working travellers if they made exercise facilities available. It’s dog friendly, and I had a good stay, but the rooms need updating.

Nial gave us such a warm welcome, and there’s a great free car park. The staff treated us really well throughout. Our room was fine, and we enjoyed the restaurant’s pie of the day with mash. Having heating in the room was a real relief as the weather got colder heading into winter. Thank you!

We were glad parking was free and the hotel was easy to reach, just a few minutes off the M4. Getting our rooms took a while, but we could use the bar while we waited. The rooms were fine, though the mattress was quite firm and the pillows too soft for it. There’s no air conditioning, and even with just two floors, the lack of a lift makes access harder. Each morning we also had to walk around the cleaning carts, which are kept near the stairs. I was surprised that a Silver member’s free welcome drink only covered one room on the booking, rather than all the guests.

We’ve stayed here before and plan to come back. It suited our short golf trip well, with free parking, tidy, clean rooms and a good breakfast to set us up for a day on the course. We ate in the restaurant too. There were enough decent choices on the menu, and the wine bottles were good quality.
