Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed here for 10 days in 1535, after a plague outbreak in Bristol. The castle had become royal property after King Henry VIII executed Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, for treason in 1521. Stafford had built Thornbury Castle in 1511, when he was one of the most powerful nobles of the Tudor era. Now it’s a luxury hotel, with historically inspired rooms furnished with four-poster beds, tapestries, and antiques. The property is stunning, and a striking example of Tudor architecture. It’s in South Gloucestershire, England, and has a long history tied to the English monarchy.
