It's a shame because these old hotels have real character and deserve to feel clean. This one was disappointing for the price. Fresh sheets or even a lick of paint would make it feel much more up to standard. I think hotels should meet a basic standard, and this one doesn't.

The bed was comfortable and the room was mostly clean and spacious, though the carpet felt hard and crunchy underfoot. The hotel has faded elegance and is a five-minute walk from the railway station. The bar restaurant next door was noisy, with loud music, and breakfast means going elsewhere.

It was a short, quiet visit in an aging hotel. I was initially given a smaller room for one night, then moved the next day because of booking constraints and got a free upgrade to a much larger room.

For a night out in Wakefield, the location is ideal, just a minute from the train station. The building is a little dated, but at £63 for a Superior room it was an absolute bargain and probably the best value hotel I've stayed in for a long time. Hotel prices these days are ridiculous. My room was massive, with a huge bed, settee, TV, tea and coffee, an iron, and everything else I needed. The bathroom was on the small side but manageable, and the reception staff were so friendly. I'd definitely come back to the York Hotel if I stay in Wakefield again.

The room was roomy and comfortable, and it was easy to walk to most places from this hotel. A great spot near the city centre.
