The rooms were basic, but clean and comfortable, with what I needed for a short visit. I was here for two business nights at a traditional country pub, and the food was very good, with a nice range of wine to go with it. The staff and local customers were so friendly that travelling on my own felt much more pleasant. I’d definitely stay again.

We came as a walking group, and they opened early for the meals we’d ordered ahead. There are lots of signed circular trails nearby. The food was reasonably priced, arrived quickly and all together, and was hot, tasty and nicely presented. The separate tables in the smaller room worked fine, though it can get busy. It’s a very old-fashioned country pub, with dark beams and low ceilings. Getting there means narrow roads, and parking is limited, though there’s plenty of unrestricted street parking.

The daily special is well worth considering. You can see the care and attention that goes into it, and the food at the moment is on another level, absolutely exceptional. This place has always had the atmosphere I love in a pub: old, lively, atmospheric and fun. Whenever I’m there, I have a great time, and the food has always been good.

After a long walk in the countryside, it’s a great place to stop for a pint and something to eat. It’s dog friendly too, and our Labrador loved snoozing by the roaring log fire. There aren’t any rooms to stay in, so I wouldn’t rate it as accommodation. It’s a traditional pub with fantastic food and an ancient atmosphere, in an original 13th century coaching house that feels steeped in history. Highly recommended.
