Room 303 turned the stay around. It was bright, comfortable and cool, with the air conditioning working properly. Full of character, it was one of my favourite hotel rooms, and exactly the kind of atmosphere I hope for in an older hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful, too. The hotel itself is nice, old-fashioned, and full of charm. Once you get used to the layout, it’s easy enough to find your way around. The contrast with Room 308 was huge. It was extremely dingy, very dark and depressing, and I wouldn’t want to stay there again. The air conditioning blew hot air from the moment we arrived. By the middle of the night the room was unbearably hot, and I started feeling ill, dizzy and nauseous. Staff tried to fix it, but it kept blowing hot air and the room stayed uncomfortable. Luckily, they moved us to Room 303 because of the problem. The experience really depended on which room we were given. If I knew I could book a room like 303 again, I’d consider returning, but the chance of getting 308 makes me hesitant. The breakfast room looked tired and worn and needs updating. Breakfast itself was disappointing and could be much better, especially given the room prices. One issue staff explained was how Booking.com lists room types: it only says “standard room,” which apparently could mean either a Cozy Standard or a Standard room. That difference isn’t clear on Booking.com, though it appears on the hotel’s main booking website, so I’m unsure which type Room 308 was. There can be a huge difference between rooms, and that letdown left me undecided about coming back.

The single room was a good size, with a shower, kettle and the usual tea selection. The bed felt spacious too: it had a single base but a slightly wider mattress and duvet than I expected. Service was good, and I mostly enjoyed my overnight stay. The room was freezing, and the thin walls meant it was easy to hear movement. I only noticed the next morning that the heater needed to be switched on, and the switch wasn’t in an obvious place. Still, I’d recommend it if you’re visiting Worcester and want a well-priced place in the city centre.

Service was friendly and efficient, and the location was very convenient, with lots of stores and the train station right next door. I had a cosy double on the top floor for one night. It seemed freshly decorated and carpeted, though other parts of the hotel felt outdated and slightly musty. The pool wasn’t open, which was a shame, but just bad timing.

There’s hardly any gym equipment for almost £60 a month, which feels like a rip-off. The pool is closed half the time for children’s swimming lessons. The changing rooms are always filthy, the floor is constantly wet because of the lessons, and the place is humid and stinks. Otherwise, it’s full of the city taxi drivers. If you like being stared at or chatted up by hairy, half-naked men while trying to relax in the sauna, it’s your place. There’s no free parking anymore, and the staff are very rude. Most don’t speak conversational English, and the service is poor for what’s almost the most expensive gym in Worcester. I don’t recommend it. Anyone who’s been there can confirm there are no inaccuracies in my review. I’ve never left another one-star review for any other place. If you don’t want to be harassed, avoid this place. You can tell from the response how disgustingly they treat customers.

The hotel is beautiful and the stay was reasonably comfortable, but front-of-house staff spoiled it. They were arrogant and insolent, to the point of being rude. I rode the lift with a woman who’d checked in at the same time as me; she brought up the same issue, and we agreed the staff weren’t suited to the job. So I wasn’t alone in that view. It’s such a pity, because the experience soured my visit to Worcester. I’m sure there’ll be camera footage, and I strongly suggest management take appropriate action.
