The steak and ale pie was the reason we went, and it absolutely lived up to expectations. Portions are big, so go hungry. We both ordered the pie, and the chips were really tasty with gravy just right. Beside us, three ladies had a huge fish that looked delicious, as did the other dishes. It's a beautiful old pub full of history, but seriously, that pie!

We were told the fish and chips were haddock, but they clearly weren't. The chips were hard and dry, and Mum couldn't eat her meal. The online menu listed pork loin for Sunday lunch, while the in-house menu said pork belly. Then the bill listed pork loin and charged me for that. I raised these concerns with the restaurant, but they dismissed them. No discount or partial refund was offered. The whole experience was very disappointing.

We were a group in our 30s to 50s, staying for a friend's birthday, and all had a great time. The food was out of this world, and the rooms were quirky and really nice. The inn is famous, very old, right in the heart of things, with a bar and food until late. There were lots of people outside, so if you want peace and quiet, this probably isn't the place for you. For us, it was perfect. Ben checked us in, gave us all the information we needed, and was always smiling and ready to help. The other staff were fantastic too, professional, helpful, and seemed genuinely happy to talk with customers. It's a fabulous place to stay, eat, and drink. I would 1000% recommend it. It might seem pricey, but it's a famous building and absolutely worth every penny.

We were so glad we'd researched places to eat before visiting York. The steak and ale pie at Guy Fawkes was excellent, and worth the roughly 30-minute wait since it's made fresh. We kept talking about it long after the trip, then looked up the recipe and tried making it at home. It turned out pretty good. It was so nice of Guy Fawkes to share the recipe for people who don't live nearby.

We had both breakfast and dinner, and both were delicious. The dinner waiting staff were all very friendly, and the location is fabulous, so I'd definitely stay again for the helpful, welcoming service. Our courtyard room was beautiful inside and easy to get to on the ground floor. Its window and door opened onto the beer garden, which felt a bit strange, so we had to shut the blinds straight away for privacy. That made the room darker. I'm not sure I'd book that particular room again.
