Lynn was excellent when she checked us in, and the bed was clean and comfortable. The shower got hot, but the rest of the room had problems: the freezer and bathroom tissue box were visibly dirty, though half the dirt came off on a washcloth. The internet worked for only about 30 minutes. The door’s security latch was partly missing and unusable, a bedside reading bulb was out, and the bathroom vent fan didn’t work. The thermostat seemed to have a mind of its own, and the room was just hot.

The floors were so dirty that my socks turned brown right away, and there was debris left unswept. There was sticky stuff on the bedside table, hair from previous guests in the tub, and the stained bedspread had what looked like previous guests’ DNA stains. I bought $18 worth of Clorox clean up and Lysol spray at a grocery store, then used an extra set of towels from the very nice clerk to mop the floors, clean the tub and sink, and spray the bedspread. I had sheets in my car, so I covered the bed and slept wrapped up on top of them. The carpets on the stairs and in the hallways were filthy too. I’d seen only one other guest car when I arrived, which should have warned me, but I had already paid. I left immediately, though driving to another hotel at 8:00 at night didn’t seem sensible. The dirt in the room was unbearable. Absolutely foul and gross. Do not stay here.

Layla’s friendly attitude made me feel welcome as soon as I checked in, and she went out of her way to make sure everyone had a good breakfast. The setup was plentiful and well cared for, a great start before hitting the road. I also appreciated the local history tips from another staff member, I think Lee, which helped me find hidden gems around Abingdon and the town parade. My recent stay at the Super 8 Hotel in Abingdon, Virginia was great. The beds were comfortable, Wi-Fi was strong, and the staff were hospitable. I can’t wait to return on my next Virginia visit.

Road noise was the one drawback, though the air conditioning drowned it out. The bathroom was clean and had seriously great water pressure, and the bed was comfortable, even if the pillows were just okay and could use an upgrade soon. A fridge, microwave, TV, desk, and two chairs were nice extras. I’d mark this place to stay again when I’m in the area.

Faith, the manager, was polite, understanding, and apologetic, and clearly tried to help. At checkout she showed us the notebook where our complaints had been recorded, explained that the race weekend’s high volume had caused some things to be overlooked, and told us how to seek a partial refund. I wasn’t asking for a full refund, just something for the room’s poor condition. Since we booked through a third-party site, I called them. After 45 minutes, they got the owner on the phone, and his immediate response was that he knew nothing about it and wouldn’t give anything back. I called the hotel and spoke with Will, the owner. When I asked for Faith, he repeatedly said he didn’t know who she was or that she worked there. After I described her, he said I couldn’t talk to her and hung up. We stayed April 8-12 for the NASCAR race in Bristol, drawn by the 20-minute drive to the track and a price that looked good next to other hotels. In hindsight, I should have paid a few dollars more and stayed somewhere else. We’d requested a non-smoking room online, but room 218 clearly wasn’t one. There were cigarette burn holes in the bedding, black mold on the bathroom ceiling above the shower, food crumbs and dirt on the headboard, tape holding the AC unit together, and dead bugs and mold in the window track. A younger woman at the front desk didn’t seem to care when we told her, saying she was leaving in two weeks and wasn’t surprised because it was a motel, not a hotel. We asked several times for fresh bedding, towels, and bathroom items, but none arrived. Faith really did understand how frustrated we were and tried to get those things sorted. This was the worst experience I’ve had with a place I hadn’t even set foot in. I’d suggest looking at other options in the area, such as VRBOs.
