The Sunset Inn

The room was comfortable and clean, and so was the bathroom. Breakfast was pretty good too. An older gentleman makes waffles if you ask, and they kept checking that there was food available. For the price, it was a good deal, but the check-in was terrible. We arrived before midnight after calling to make sure someone would be at the desk. The doors are apparently locked from 10pm to 6am, which I don't think was mentioned on the website when I booked. A sign said to ring the front door camera. I pressed it four times and waited more than five minutes. We called, and the person who answered sounded grumpy and told us to ring the bell. We said we had. Eventually someone came and checked us in. They should put the locked-door information on the website. Once we were settled, a really strong cigarette smell filled the room while the air unit was cooling it down. Maybe someone outside was smoking and the unit drew it in, but it wasn't pleasant.

The staff were nice, and my room was very clean with a comfortable bed. The price is great, but don't count on breakfast. On my March 18-20 stay, the weekday spread was bagels without cream cheese, sugary cereal, and waffles a staff member had to make. No protein or healthy choices. The hot water was only tepid, and the coffee was weak.

Alex at the desk was accommodating when we needed a last-minute room change at check-in. Both rooms looked very clean, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was spacious, and the ceiling fan was a nice extra. The advertised breakfast was a big letdown: bagels, cold cereal, and two soggy premade waffles that didn't look appealing. Since breakfast is promoted on the road sign and website, I expected more, at least a protein choice. The Sunset Inn could be a great getaway for a visit to the Great Sand Dunes if they put a bit more into breakfast.

The bathroom and room were really clean, and it was great value for money. The kitchen gentleman was very kind, and the owner checked that everything was okay. There are also a few lovely cats wandering around. Definitely recommend.
