I booked after seeing the solid online ratings and regretted it as soon as I walked in. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels around the U.S. and abroad, and this was far below what I'd call dated but acceptable. The building felt freezing the whole time, and the room looked badly overdue for a major update, from the 1990s carpet and furniture to the old finishes. The TVs were ancient and didn't even have a guide, and the place just didn't feel clean, modern, or welcoming. The elevators were slow, creaky, and genuinely scary. Other guests commented too, and I half expected one to stop between floors. The HVAC couldn't keep the temperature right. There was a portable dehumidifier running full blast in the corner, supposedly to "kick out heat," which made no sense to me. I made it through one night, checked out, and booked somewhere else. The front desk staff were nice and friendly at check-in, which is the only reason I can't give this zero stars, but they can't make up for the property's condition. I wouldn't stay again unless it gets a complete renovation.

Betty at Reception was so welcoming when I walked in off the street to find a room for the night. She answered all my questions before I booked online, asked what kind of room I wanted, and made sure I got a comfortable space that suited me. The room was very clean, and the location is excellent, with good food options within walking distance and transportation close by. There's parking on site too. Great value, and I'd stay again.

We had to leave a day early at 4 p.m. because of a family medical emergency, and Betty understood and didn't charge us for the missed night. We were rushing out and left a couple of clothing items behind. Housekeeping reported them to Betty, who called me right away and kept them for me to pick up the next day. The staff were wonderful throughout, and the modern room was very clean. The location is fantastic for walking to shops and restaurants on King St, and garage parking is $20 a night. The stay exceeded our expectations, and we'll definitely come back to this Hampton Inn.

The location was convenient for picking up my sister at the train station and spending the day together. But after check-in, we found our room on the first floor, tucked in a back corner near the laundry and some outside double doors. I asked the receptionist whether another room was available, and was told this was the room type I'd chosen and there wasn't another one like it. We had dinner reservations and needed to get dressed, so I reluctantly stayed. The next morning I saw a roach crawling on the bathroom floor while I was showering. We checked out right away and left the key on the desk, since nobody was there to hear our concern. Stay in Arlington, or don't stay here.

I'm local, so I haven't stayed here lately, but I hear good things about the Hampton Inn on King Street. Betty, whose name I saw on her tag, let me use the ladies' room around 11 p.m. after a nearby restaurant messed up my order. They fixed it, but it took an extra half hour, they were closing, and I missed the bus. They weren't happy that I needed the bathroom, so I paid and left. I tried Bob and Edith's, thinking it was open 24 hours, but it isn't anymore. Betty was so kind and didn't even ask why I needed to use the restroom. I'd give the hotel 100 stars for that alone. I then had to walk home for over an hour, so her kindness really helped me. The area is lovely for visitors. King Street Metro is a block away and offers the quickest way to Washington DC. Friends and family can find you easily, and there are lots of restaurants nearby if they're open. Head east down King Street to the river for shopping, restaurants, and hidden gems on every block. If you need your hair done, try Sugar House Day Spa and Salon, a block off King and Washington Streets near the excellent Ross on Washington Street. I don't remember the address, but you can ask or look it up. Nadia is my favorite stylist, a genius with color and everything else, and she'll fit you in if she can. The shampoo ladies, especially Morena and Maria, are wonderful. They also offer massages and other relaxing treatments, and everything there is top shelf. If you don't want to walk, free buses run until at least midnight. The King Street Trolley is easy to spot, and the other free bus is the Alexandria Dash Bus, which has been free since Covid. People don't always know that. They usually share a stop, but not always, and even I get mixed up. The Dash stop has a blue sign; the trolley stop has a yellow and brown sign. If you miss the bus, it's only a 20-minute walk east to the river. Most restaurants down there stay open late. Check out Chadwick’s, which I believe serves a full menu until at least 1 a.m. even on weekdays, a block from the water with lots of lively fun. I got carried away and wrote about Alexandria instead of just the hotel. It's a beautiful historic city, very safe, with hardly any crime and a wonderful police force. They never bother anyone, but they'll be there quickly if you need them.
