Management reached out with an apology, which I appreciate, but the emails focused on whether we checked out late instead of taking responsibility for Room 409. Checkout was at 11:00 AM and I left at 10:40 AM. I have timestamped photos and videos showing the room’s condition and when I left. The problem is that Room 409 shouldn’t be rented in that state. It needs to meet basic cleanliness and safety standards first. I paid $210 for two nights, January 21-23, 2026, for two adults and two children. The room with two beds I’d requested wasn’t available, and its location at the back of the building meant I couldn’t see my car. That made me uncomfortable. Tired, cold, and arriving late, I felt pressured to take another room. Being able to see the car from that room mattered because I travel with two service dogs, one alert dog and one PTSD dog, as well as two emotional support cats. The bed was unmade, so staff had to change the bedding and towels. The bedding was still dirty and covered in hair afterward, and we brought our own blankets for the children. The chair and couch were badly worn and peeling. I slept in my car both nights because the room felt unsanitary and I wanted to keep my animals safe. I didn’t let the cats into the room at all, and my service dog only went in briefly once. Staff were polite and the water was hot, but those things didn’t make up for the room or the price. I wasn’t expecting luxury, just somewhere clean and safe to rest. It felt more like a truck stop and wasn’t worth $210.
The photos and two Google reviews at the top of the results led me to book this while driving through the Chicago area for affordable pet-friendly lodging, but they were misleading. I felt unsafe in room 409, which smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and had badly scratched and damaged furniture. The front desk guy was nice enough and called the manager to request a refund. The manager said “definitely not” and offered to move us to another building where the rooms were supposedly nicer. By then, my boyfriend and I were also unsettled by shady people going in and out of a room on the second level. One wore a black face mask over the lower part of his face, and that freaked me out. I didn’t get the sense he was wearing it for sanitary reasons.
They’re pet friendly, and the service was friendly too. The room was clean, the shower had hot water and great pressure, and the heater worked well in the cold. Definitely a good spot to stop for the night.
Traveling from out of state, I found this place welcoming and pet friendly, which can be hard to find. The front desk was kind and helpful, and the hotel was clean and affordable. My pet enjoyed the stay too. Thanks, The Red Roof, for what I needed at a good price. Highly recommend.
Good for the price, though it could use a few fixes. The door card didn’t work, and the vanity mirror light was out. Little issues, but they would’ve made the difference for five stars.
