We appreciated the complimentary coffee and muffins in the morning, and had a good dinner at the restaurant. Our server was really friendly too. At check-in, a friendly staff member showed us around the building before taking us to our room. It was clean and cute, with a train theme. There wasn’t a TV, but we read a lot and my partner hates commercials, so we didn’t miss it. After a long, strenuous hike, I’d been looking forward to a hot bath, but the water didn’t quite get warm enough. It was late, so I didn’t want to bother anyone and figured it might be old plumbing. The pressure was good. The outlets were also a little awkward to reach, though that seemed understandable in an old building.

I love historic hotels and have stayed in plenty. I’m happy to pay extra to support them, but this stay left me wishing I’d saved the $140 and the aggravation. The coffee shop looked nice, and the pizza at the bar was excellent. My verdict: visit, but stay at a well-rated motel in town instead. The hotel room area’s main door stayed ajar all afternoon because it wouldn’t close properly. When you did get it shut, it jammed. I’d enter my code, see the light turn green, and still couldn’t open it. I told the bartender this must have been reported before and was told to use the side door from inside the bar. That worked until the bar closed, or until an early checkout when nobody was around. There were other basic hotel procedures handled poorly, and I was given incorrect information. The place doesn’t seem looked after. I messaged the hotel to say I was disappointed. They asked why, so I took the time to explain, but haven’t heard anything since. Grrrr.

We’ve come back to Hotel Niles each June for over three years, traveling through and back for an event in Sacramento County. Its history and nostalgic feel are what we love. I’m sorry the restaurant is open fewer days now, since that means we can’t enjoy it. If you need modern conveniences or can’t manage stairs, you should book somewhere else.

What a fun trip. I loved wandering through the historic nooks and crannies of this gorgeous place, and the free Starbucks in the morning was a treat. The rooms were clean, and the women at the front desk had lovely eyes and spirits. Everyone in and out of the building was wonderful. Raylyns gave us expert help with everything we needed, going above and beyond. I’m so grateful for the service, and we’ll be back!

We used to love this hotel, but we won’t stay again. We paid $200 for a night when a wedding reception was going on inside and outside the building. The noise was raucous and carried right through our suite. After 10 pm we asked when the party would end and were told there was no set time. The music finally stopped at midnight, and I was grateful to get any sleep before our six-hour drive home. We weren’t told about the event beforehand. We feel the hotel kept quiet about it to avoid losing the booking revenue. The least the staff could have done was warn us and tell us how long the party might last. Customer service and consideration for other guests seem to have fallen off. It was an unconscionable, terrible night. We loved this place, so the loss is huge.
