The road noise from I-40 went on all night, and the plumbing was a mess: the toilet barely flushed, the shower drain gurgled when it did, and the sink took five minutes to empty halfway. The bathroom also didn’t feel sanitary. The room itself was clean, but breakfast was just waffles or cold cereal, and the coffee was awful. I’d booked a non-smoking room with two queen beds at Days Inn Amarillo East the day before we passed through Amarillo. On Saturday, while we were driving there, management called to say that room wasn’t available and offered two full beds instead. Other nearby hotels were booked, so I had no real choice. The same man was at the desk when we arrived. He said it was the best he could do and took $10 off after I complained. Stay somewhere else if you can. This place felt badly managed, and guest comfort seemed like the last concern. I wish I could give it less than one star.

We had a quiet, comfortable night, and the bed was especially welcome after a long day. The room was clean, though the place shows signs of being old and heavily used. We did have one issue in the room, but staff fixed it quickly. Check-in was easy, the lobby was tidy and inviting, and the elevator ride to the second floor was smooth. The parking lot could use some maintenance. Breakfast was sparse, but we found enough to get by.

We arrived around 1 a.m. and left early the next morning to drive across New Mexico, so my autistic daughter accidentally left Ducky behind. It’s a worn-out stuffed animal she’s had for nine years and means everything to her. By the time she noticed, we were more than two and a half hours away and couldn’t turn back without disrupting the whole trip. She was devastated. The receptionist at Days Inn by Wyndham Amarillo East was incredibly kind. She went to the room, found Ducky, and shipped it to our home, asking only for the $7 shipping cost. My daughter was overjoyed to find it waiting when we got back. Thank you to the staff. We’d stay here again if we were in the area. We’d picked this very cheap room for the first night of a nine-day road trip from Missouri to the Grand Canyon and back through Utah and Colorado. Campsites nearby were full, and I think the total came to $69. For a two-star hotel and the cheapest room I’d ever booked, I wasn’t expecting much, but it was a pleasant surprise: clean room and towels, toiletries, and everything worked.

There’s a smell, and the floors and bathroom sinks have cracks. The bathroom sink water can jump from normal to scalding in an instant. Our TV wouldn’t turn off. When we called maintenance, they said, “ugh, do what you have to do,” so we unplugged the cable to get some sleep. It’s right off the freeway and close to food stops, which is handy for a quick in-and-out stay.

The towels had dark spots and brown marks on them. My little brother noticed when he got out of the shower and started drying off. The bathroom had mold around it and on the shower head, and part of the shower floor covering was peeling. It looked nothing like the pictures. I kept hoping things would improve, but they didn’t. I hope the hotel makes changes, because I wouldn’t wish this stay on anyone.
