The Iowa Stater Restaurant on the second floor deserves a mention. I had both breakfast and dinner there this trip, and both meals were excellent. Lexi served me today, and a young man last night. I learned they’re both Iowa State students. It’s a great restaurant within walking distance of the room. I came from Orlando, Florida for a two-night stay at the Gateway Hotel & Conference Center for the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Iowa State Dairy Association (ISDA). The service was so good that the rates could be much higher. I shipped numerous boxes ahead with UPS, and Meghan at the front desk was incredibly kind and helpful arranging for them to be received. When I picked them up today, I realized I’d forgotten to ship my Impact Driver from Florida. Phoenicia at the Front Desk came to the rescue by getting Mike from Maintenance to lend me one, which helped me avert another crisis. For excellent, five-star service and great value from Mike, Phoenicia, and Meghan, I strongly suggest booking the Gateway Hotel & Conference Center at 2100 Green Hills Drive in Ames, Iowa 50014 for a company annual meeting. If you’re lucky, Meghan and Phoenicia will be at the front desk, ready to help with whatever you need.

I come here a couple of times a year and usually have a decent stay. One time, though, it didn’t seem like the room had been cleaned, with hair and stains on the toilet and dirt on the floor. The fitness center is very nice, spacious, and has everything you need.

The parking lot has two fairly fast EV chargers, and luggage carts were easy to find. The rooms were clean, and the pool and hot tub were in good shape. I’d stay here again.

The staff were outstanding, and breakfast at the IowaStater was the cherry on top. The rooms were really nice and quiet, with a very comfortable bed. There’s a heated pool, a hot hot tub, and a sauna.

The hotel itself is okay, but don’t stay here if you need flexible policies. They penalize you for booking early and won’t honor rate changes proactively or even after you ask. There are much better options in Ames now. Try Courtyard or Springhill, no games.
