Royal Inn

The rooms feel new inside, even though the hotel looks older from the outside. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to help. For the quality, it’s a great value.

The bathroom made this stay a no for me. The shower was barely warm, there were no grab bars or anything else to hold, and the tub surface was slick. At seventy, I felt genuinely nervous standing in there and unsafe. That was enough to rule the place out, and I won’t return. I visit the Greenville area once or twice a year and usually look for an economical room. I know that can mean lower standards, and I’m generally just hoping for a place that will do. Now and then I try another discount hotel, but Royal Inn didn’t meet even those expectations. To give credit where it’s due, the room was clean and I saw no bugs or other little critters. There were other small things I’d expect at that price, but the other inexpensive inns along that stretch of I-20 were better.

The rooms are large and clean, and the people running the place are very nice. But on my last night I got covered in bites. They were in groups of three or four, so I knew they were bed bug bites. The first night I’d been bitten too, but thought it might be a mosquito. I told the man in the office, and when I came back that evening to pay, he said they had checked the bed and found nothing. I stayed several more nights without getting bitten, then left for work after that last night and didn’t come back.

There’s lots of room to park a semi trailer, and the employees were pleasant. The rooms were clean, really clean. For what I paid, I expected a lot worse. Don’t judge it by the outside.
