We stayed in several rooms as a family over a few days, and the place felt badly neglected. Carpets were worn, stained, and smelled, while the furniture was threadbare or hidden under cheap covers. Old towels and sheets had stains that laundry apparently couldn't shift. In the rooms, some kitchen faucets and counters were broken, outlets were loose or dead, and mismatched lights were missing bulbs or didn't work. My bathroom fan rattled, the shower diverter whined and didn't seal, the heat lamp was out, and the hair dryer dangled from a broken mount. Some fireplaces didn't work either, despite the sign outside advertising one in every room. The rooms are spacious, but the kitchenettes are badly outdated, and the stove elements were lined with foil instead of proper liners. Breakfast was just weak coffee, a little bread, frozen waffles, and bulk cereal, with juice and milk left in open carafes. Anaco Bay Inn in Anacortes, Washington clearly had a better past: it still displays awards from travel organizations earned about ten years ago, when previous owners cared for it. The current owners haven't kept up that standard, or even basic maintenance. Unless a low rate is your only concern, I'd avoid this once-iconic hotel.

The sleep was rough: the place smelled of weed and the beds were really uncomfortable. I checked out at 5 am and later realized I'd left my toiletry bag behind. They replied quickly to my email, but at first said nothing had been found, which was frustrating since I was willing to come back for it. I couldn't imagine anyone wanting a used toothbrush and my other personal things. Update: another guest who checked in after me found the bag and returned it, and the inn emailed me back. That's cool, though I still had a bad night's sleep.

The building itself looked classy, but the rooms don't seem to get the same care. Our room, 202, was fairly quiet since the motel wasn't very full, though the tall room made noise echo. The AC filter wasn't too bad, but the unit smelled sour and old. There was no ice because the machine was out of order, and I hope maintenance or the owners fix it. At check-in the front desk was polite, and the room was adequate as a safe place to sleep, but it wasn't clean. I found crumbs on the left side of the bed and hairs in the tub. The clogged tub was the worst part: during our shower, dirty stuff floated up from the drain and the water covered our feet. I didn't feel clean at all. The bathroom fan was shockingly loud, and the shower squealed until I dropped the spout diverter pin. As a former housekeeper, I'd ask them to clean the drains and AC filters and vacuum. Some decor would help too, since all the blank space made me a little anxious.

My family stayed in a cute little duplex at Anaco Bay Inn and we all slept well. It was quiet and comfortable, and the staff were wonderful. Shy was especially terrific to us. We come to the island for a family vacation every year and usually stay near the ferry terminal the night before. We enjoyed the continental breakfast and plan to make this one of our regular stops.

The room was huge, with a fireplace and a great little kitchenette. It was super clean, and the bed and pillows were comfy. Staff were very friendly. The place is a little dated, and the towels were just so-so, but the shower pressure was nice.
