The daily hikes are such a big deal if you don’t have a rental car. I got to hike Flat Top, and Olay walked with us and provided sticks and bear spray. You can also rent a bike for the nearby Coastal Trail into downtown, plus camping gear. I picked up bear spray, a puffy jacket, sleeping bag, tent, and pillows for a peninsula road trip. They’ve got three backyard chickens, the Golden Girls, who are adorable and feisty mouse hunters. It looks small outside, but inside there’s a cool three-story setup with cozy places to hang out. The communal feel was great, with good chats and hangs with other hostel members, and I loved the sauna. When co-living got overwhelming, there was even a sound deprivation tank. I’m really bummed I never tried it. Olay is kind, and his manager Karisa and the volunteers, Daniel included, are such a vibe. They look out for you and make the place feel homey.

I’ve been coming back to Base Camp Hostel since 2021, and each stay has been better. The staff are wonderful, and the inspiration you get from other guests makes the price feel like a bargain. If you’re new to hostels, this is a lucky first one.

Base Camp Anchorage Hostel is where I’d stay again in Anchorage, and I’ll 100% be back. It’s the best hostel I’ve found in the United States, full of travelers from all over. The staff are friendly and capable, there are daily hikes and lots of recommendations, and they offer just about anything you could want, free or for a fee. Hostels are scarce in the US, and I love them as a way to get into a new city, so this was a great fit. The laundry was frustrating, though. I travel light and arrived just before 11 p.m. in my last clean clothes, but laundry seemed to be available only from around 2 to 9 p.m. It cost $10, twice what a nearby laundromat charged. The machines sat unused until at least 9 a.m., when the hostel linens were being washed.

The host was so sweet and helpful, and the bed was really comfortable. Breakfast was provided too. We had a great evening, with the Saturday market, ocean trail, parks, and places to eat all within walking distance. The backyard was lovely, and there’s a sensory deprivation tub, hot sauna, bike rentals, camping gear, and more. Super affordable and well located.

Base Camp is close to both downtown Anchorage and the airport, and I’d definitely recommend it. The staff are kind, flexible, helpful, and full of local tips they’re happy to share. The atmosphere was great, with interesting people around who weren’t intrusive, pleasant common areas, a nice kitchen, and outdoor space with picnic tables. The bathrooms and laundry were among the cleanest I’ve seen at a hostel. Beds were comfortable and rooms spacious too.
