For the price, this was a fantastic stay. The parking is set back from the street, and there’s a lovely front garden with a fountain. My room had a fridge and TV, but no microwave. When I asked the front desk clerk about one, he opened the breakfast room in the middle of the night so I could use its microwave. Check-out isn’t until noon. The continental breakfast was a bit lackluster, but I had a great experience overall.

Service was very good, and the hotel is decent, with spacious rooms and a nice garden and lawn. The kitchen was a bit dirty. Also, the doors and windows didn’t seal tightly, so we could hear people playing in the park across the parking lot.

The grounds were amazing, and the whole place had a gorgeous rustic feel. Our rooms were lovely and well kept, and my family really enjoyed swimming together in the huge pool. There are lots of restaurants nearby, along with the Santa Anita mall and the Santa Anita horse track.

It’s a beautiful place in a nice area, with cool rooms. The pool keeper took away two stars for us, though. We were swimming with a friend who was staying there when he told us to leave at 11 p.m. I understand he had to close the pool, but he was really rude about it. We apologized, and he said nothing. My friend apologized again as we left, and still got no response.

Room 105 smelled like it hadn’t been aired out since 1966. The walls had holes, mostly in the bathroom, including a gaping space under the toilet around a pipe, big enough for a rodent to come through. There was a window above the toilet that had been left open, and I realized it couldn’t be shut. Overnight, bugs got into the room and settled in the bathtub. When I pulled back the curtain in the morning, there were eight different insects. The sliding glass door to the balcony wouldn’t open anyway, and the outside was covered in cobwebs and bugs. The room also had cheap dark green or aquamarine plush carpet, mismatched furniture, a huge pink armoire that dwarfed the room, and a tube TV that reminded me of my parents’ TV from when I was a kid in 1992. Someone had unplugged it, and it was far from the outlet. There was a dark plaid loveseat jammed into a corner with a small glass table and chairs. The bed felt like cardboard. I arrived late at night and was going to stay at the Motel 6 less than a mile down the road because it was cheaper. My mother called and said this place had free breakfast for around $80, so I went here instead. Huge mistake. After my single night, I tried to complain, but the man and two women behind the counter kept carrying on their own conversation while I spoke. It was obvious they didn’t care. I’m 25, not 85, and I can’t see anything redeemable about this place. Maybe people who want to reminisce about a crappy time in the past with a crappy spouse will like the Santa Anita Inn. The rest of you who want good value should go a mile down the road to the Motel 6. There’s no free breakfast there, but since its renovation it’s immaculate, with no bugs or bullshit. You get what you pay for and don’t feel cheated. The owners of the Santa Anita Inn can go straight to hell on the back of one of those cockroaches I saw in the bathtub of room 105.
