The Mountaineer Inn

For a one-night stop on our road trip, this was fine for what we paid. The kids liked it, and the location was great. The room was a good size and fairly clean, though not spotless. We had coffee in the room and a fresh bar of soap, but no shampoo or conditioner. The listing mentioned free breakfast, but there wasn’t one, just coffee in the front office. The pool was clean and nice, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

The location is decent, not too far from downtown, and that was the one real benefit. Outside looked nice and rustic, apart from the green pool, which wasn’t in use that time of year. The staff were nice, but they had conversations in front of customers that felt unprofessional. The room was dated, as expected for the price, but it didn’t feel clean. The towels were stained and almost crusty, and the pillows looked like they belonged in a child’s bed. Bring your own bedding if you stay. The blackout curtains had tiny holes, and the insides of the dressers and the room’s baseboards were dusty. The room smelled strongly of stale weed and industrial cleaning products. The cleaning smell was so overpowering that I didn’t want to spend more time in there than necessary. I left a day early instead of using the second night I’d paid for. I’d only consider this place if there were literally no other option.

The rooms were very clean, with no stains, mold, bugs, or dust. Staff were kind and helpful, and getting extra toiletries, towels, blankets, or pillows was easy. The cleaning crew respected Do Not Disturb signs. The bathroom tile work wasn’t perfect, but it was no deal breaker. This is a cozy, affordable inn, less than 15 minutes from downtown and other places to visit. The parking is well lit and right by the rooms, which made loading and unloading simple. It wasn’t always completely quiet at night, but nothing kept us from sleeping. Breakfast was smaller than at big chain hotels, with fresh fruit and hot coffee, and it’s first come, first served, so get up early if you want a full meal. I’d recommend it for a good value without giving up much quality.

We got in after a long, hard day of hiking and went straight to shower. The shower was dark because it had no light, there was no shampoo or conditioner, and the water took ages to get warm. The room was hot, and we couldn’t control its temperature. It was dated, which didn’t bother us much, but there was no mattress cover and the bed was so soft we sank into it. The smoke detector was missing. I wasn’t willing to risk staying there because of that safety hazard, even if things might have been fine. The listing said laundry was available on site, which was one reason we chose the motel after several days of hiking, but there were no laundry facilities. We asked for a refund and were refused because we’d been there more than 15 minutes. We went straight to shower because we were filthy, and I noticed the problems as soon as I sat down afterward. We’d been there maybe an hour. The woman at the front desk was polite and just following her boss’s instructions. I’ll have to dispute the charge with my credit card company. We went to another hotel down the road, which was much nicer. I’d avoid this place. It feels unsafe, and it has been reported to the health and safety department.
