The pool is a nice bonus for families or groups who don’t want to stay cooped up watching TV in their rooms, and the beds are quite comfy compared with most inns I’ve tried. The place is being updated and has a warm, organized, family-home feel. It feels like an extension of home, and I’d call it a good choice if you’re undecided. Eight out of ten checks from me, which is perfect for the occasion.

The hot breakfast before the tour helped both my daughter and me get ready for the day. We stayed one night so she could tour Ohio University, and the room was nice. The staff were very courteous, and I’ll probably stay here again if she chooses to go to the university.

I’ve stayed here before because it’s easy to get to the OU campus, but after a couple of years away, I was very disappointed. The room was clean and all the staff were very nice, but the jacuzzi tub didn’t work properly, and the person who came to check it seemed to have no idea what he was doing. The front desk person at check-in was nice, though he smelled like he’d run a marathon two days earlier and still hadn’t showered. If you pay extra for an amenity, you should get what you paid for. The hot tub and pool area were disgustingly dirty.

I’ve been loyal to Choice Hotels brands for years and usually choose them over other places. After paying $250 for one night at Quality Inn Athens, I’m not sure I’ll do that again. We came to visit my dad in the hospital, and the property was poorly maintained and unclean throughout. In room 219 there was crud and dust in the corners, urine stains in the bathroom, grime on the office chair, scuffed walls with a large dent, and a desk lamp that didn’t work. The beds were lumpy and uncomfortable, the sheets itchy, and the top bedding stained. Our oldest son chose the floor instead. The room was too warm, and the AC barely cooled it even on high, so my wife and I got no more than two hours of sleep. The halls had a stale, musty odor, and the floors were warped and falling apart, with spots that could cause someone to trip. The breakfast area is tiny, so go early. They had ham, instant scrambled eggs, a waffle maker, and packaged cereal. If you have dietary restrictions, Bob Evans is next door and walkable. The man who checked us in also handled checkout. He was impersonal and didn’t give me a chance to offer feedback. The nicest part was a likely maintenance worker lending me a broom to clear snow from the bed of our truck. The apple juice wasn’t too bad either. If Quality Inn Athens wants to be an extreme budget hotel, it should price itself accordingly. A Choice Hotels site survey would likely be appalled by the property’s lack of quality. It damages their brand and name.

Our stay was perfect, and we’ll definitely be back. The room was extremely clean and updated, though there were a couple of moisture cracks in the wood floor. I wear slippers anyway. The front desk people were kind, and coffee and juice were available all day and night. We didn’t use the pool, but it looked really nice, and the jacuzzi in our room was fantastic. The one other thing I noticed was dark bits coming out with the ice, so that needs cleaning. It’s less than a mile from campus, with plenty of places nearby to pick up what we needed.
