Courtland Grand Hotel, Trademark Collection by Wyndham

The breakfast team deserves a 5 for service. They were short-staffed but worked hard to look after everyone and keep things moving. I appreciated their effort. I did have several concerns. At the Starbucks inside the hotel, I saw an employee clear her nose with her hand and then keep handling things without washing. That’s unacceptable for food service and needs to be addressed with proper hygiene training. The rooms were okay, but needed more thorough cleaning. They weren’t the worst I’ve seen, just below what I expected. The Level 1 carpets had a strong odor that seemed to trigger allergies and made the area uncomfortable. There was also a large group of kids who appeared to be attending prom, with too little adult supervision. They were disruptive at times and acted as if they were at home instead of in a shared hotel. The staff, especially at breakfast, did what they could under pressure, but cleanliness, hygiene, and supervision of large groups need to improve.

The pool area was beautiful and was a big reason we picked this hotel, though the pool towels were tiny, even smaller than the bath towels in our room. The lobby and common areas were clean too. One elevator went down on our first day, but seemed to be fixed for the rest of the weekend. Our first room had a lot of problems: the AC didn’t work right, only one outlet worked, the sheets smelled terrible, and the shower had poor hot water and pressure. The staff were kind when we raised it, moved us to another room, and gave us free breakfast, which I appreciated. The new room was in much better shape, though it smelled a bit like a smoking room. The location suited our needs, but parking meant either $60 a night for valet or paying for the garage across the street. It wasn’t the worst stay, but for the price and what we got, I probably wouldn’t return or recommend it. I wouldn’t call it “luxury.”

The rooms were clean, and although it’s an older building, it has been remodeled. Staff were nice and went out of their way to help our conference group of over 500 people. The valet attendants could be a little rude sometimes. There’s a restaurant inside and some other amenities I didn’t get to try. I’d come back.

The pool is still the jewel of the crown, and it was nice to see the pool gazebo bar in use. I’ve stayed here many times for different conventions, and over the years the hotel has improved the things that were wrong when Wyndham took over the property. Service was good, and even the speed of service at the busy hotel restaurant seemed better. They also catered food downstairs as another option during the event. Keep progressing, Courtland Grand!
