We loved the old house, and the owner welcomed us with hugs like we were old friends. Staying in the carriage house felt like stepping into history, and we were glad we picked this B&B over a standard hotel. We're a middle aged married couple, and the fireplace and two person Jacuzzi made for a much more romantic evening than we'd have had with a TV on in a regular room. The room was adorable and the large bed was comfortable. We thought we had the meadow view room, though we weren't sure, and the view now seemed mostly blocked by the new house next door. It is a quiet, traditional place, old fashioned and low tech in many ways. Our room had a new Jacuzzi or whirlpool tub, which was a lovely way to relax after our night out. The bathroom also had an old fashioned claw foot tub and a shower. The fireplace warmed the room so much that we turned it off early. Breakfast in the conservatory, or sunroom, was lovely, with lots of food grown on the property or locally. We asked the owner about some unfamiliar plants and learned a few things. The one thing we forgot to pack was a phone charger, and since we arrived late at night, we didn't ask whether they had spares. It's a very old property and may not suit everyone, but we would happily stay again next time we're in Iowa.

Barbara was kind and welcoming, and the Fireside Room was quiet, warm, nicely decorated, and had a comfortable bed. The ensuite bathroom was fine too. I was traveling alone and was the only guest that night. Those are the reasons I give it two stars out of five. The rest of the house felt dark and gloomy, with a strong musty smell throughout. Barbara seems to be trying to care for a large property, but there were cobwebs and dust under the bed, and the downstairs rooms and front area could use more light. In this condition, I wouldn't call it a romantic place for couples. I didn't raise these issues with the owner because I was there as a guest, not an inspector. I'm sharing them publicly so future guests know what to expect.

The interior felt dark, even with all the plants, and some natural light could make it much more cheerful. The Victorian mansion's outside needs substantial care: the building and sign need paint, and the landscaping needs trimming. I'd also update the furniture and window coverings.

Barbara was a gracious host and a wonderful cook. We loved hearing her stories about the house and the area while staying at this charming estate. It isn't a modern hotel room, but it has plenty of charm and made for a lovely visit. We'd stay again.

Barbara made us a wonderful homemade breakfast: thick sliced bacon, eggs with herbs from her garden, and apple streusel muffins made with apples from her tree. She was kind, helpful, and accommodating, and answered all my questions about the timeless mansion, along with sharing stories about it. My husband and I stayed in a gorgeous suite at the Chestnut Charm antique mansion after a wedding. It had its own bathroom and fireplace. We really enjoyed our stay, and I wish there were more bed and breakfasts like this.
