The bathroom was filthy, with brown splatter on the walls, stained towels, a fan caked in dust, and a tub coated in mold and soap scum. It looked like it hadn't been properly cleaned in months. There were open drywall cutouts around the sprinkler in both the room and bathroom, which felt like a serious safety and privacy issue. The sheets had stains and little black hairs, so we had to get a staff member to change them. A dead fly with blood on it was on the lampshade, and the room also had backwards curtains and a stained office chair wrapped in electrical tape. The hallway door was grimy and the carpet had what looked like a big bloodstain. When we arrived at the Center Street Value Inn in Auburn, ME, someone who looked like they were on drugs was digging through the dumpster. The entrance had a taped plastic “open” sign, a strong bleach smell, and a pest control notice inside. At the desk, a handwritten note behind plexiglass said to call a number and wait five minutes. We called and waited for someone to come check us in, while a police officer arrived to talk to the clerk, making an already sketchy first impression worse. Breakfast was supposedly included, but nobody mentioned it at check-in and we never saw any sign of it. I rarely write reviews, but this was shockingly bad and easily the worst hotel I've stayed in.

I stayed here for a long time, and the owner and staff gave excellent service throughout. I'm big on customer service, and they went above and beyond. There was always something being upgraded or replaced while I was there, and you can tell they take pride in the hotel. It's affordable and clean, and I'd definitely recommend the Center Street Value Inn.

The rest of the hotel was torn up while we were there, with bare concrete floors, no working ice machines, and vending machines unplugged and out of service. The room they called recently remodeled looked half finished, with chipped flooring, sloppy caulk, tape residue on moved furniture, and a strange drop ceiling. The walls had smears, pipes and wires were exposed, and there was a hole in a bathroom wall stuffed with toilet paper. The bright white LED lighting was awful. This room was dirty and poorly maintained, and the whole property was under construction. Don't be fooled by the remodel ad. I wouldn't recommend staying here at all.

The WiFi didn't work at all, so we had to use our own hotspot. The hotel also charged our card before we arrived, even though its website said payment would be taken at check-in. The room was in awful shape, with visible stains on the chairs and bed and grease marks on the headboards. The carpet outside our door had what looked like several bloodstains. In the parking lot, we saw people having sex in cars, and prostitution and drug activity seemed to be happening openly around the building. Homeless people often came and went, and pets were urinating on carpets outside rooms. Staff were rude and confrontational with us more than once. Most disturbing, they insisted on entering our room while we were away even after we'd specifically asked them not to. The place felt unsafe, unsanitary, and badly managed. I'd strongly advise people to avoid it.

The rooms have just been remodeled and look beautiful, with nice new floors and comfortable beds. Everything was clean, with no bugs. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. We'll stay here again when we're passing through on vacation or for business.
