The house’s history is everywhere, from the numbered windows to the hidden booze shelves in the walls and the ceiling carvings. The owners do a wonderful job sharing it, and the place is absolutely beautiful. They were also incredibly kind: I came from Florida without a warm enough jacket for the cold snap, and she lent me one. All the staff were great. Breakfast was good, with gluten-free options made for me, and they also had a gluten-free nightly treat delivered to the rooms. Downtown shops and restaurants are within walking distance. We had such a good time and will definitely be back.

Amy, Isha, Mary, and Emma made our stay feel perfect. The breakfast was to die for, especially the grits, and the cookies at turndown were such a special touch. We loved reading on the third-floor porch, too. The room was stunning, and the whole inn had beautiful decor and breathtaking character. We’ve never had a stay that deserved five stars more, and we can’t wait to return!

We had room 406, with a spectacular view of the marina, Beaufort River, and Bay Street in town. This incredible home combines updates with old Southern charm. The hand-carved staircase, painted ceilings, and three lovely porches stood out, along with the outstanding breakfast and friendly, helpful innkeeper. It was a wonderful getaway, and we’ll definitely be back!

The staff who were there worked hard and were kind, and every staff member was amazing, helpful, and professional. We also enjoyed the striking room view, walkable location near shops and dining, easy parking, evening cookies, and the inn’s well explained history. The breakfast was average, though the waitress was lovely. The on-site restaurant wasn’t open for sit-down dinner during our three-night stay, likely because of the holiday. Cleanliness and upkeep were disappointing. Our chairs had soiled upholstery, the decorative pillows looked unwashed and had hair on them, and there was dirt in the room corners. Roaches of different sizes appeared in the bathroom every evening, making the room uncomfortable and seeming unsanitary. Hot water took about 10-15 minutes to arrive. Unusually cold weather and our upper-floor location may have contributed, but we had to plan around it. In shared areas, tables had cup marks, there was noticeable dust, and the stairs and surface crevices were dirty. Some paint was chipped, and the inn seemed to need general maintenance. Email replies were slow, and the owners weren’t on site, understandably during the holiday season. With the cleanliness and maintenance issues, and the gap between expectations and experience, we likely wouldn’t return or recommend it as a five-star inn.

Sipping wine on the upper patio among the iconic columns, dining on the front patio at sunset over the marsh, and having after-dinner drinks in the main room made for a truly classic inn stay. Our lovely fourth-floor room at the Anchorage 1770 had bay views and luxurious bedding, and the historic home is beautiful. Amy, the owner, was a gracious host who shared her local knowledge and passion for preserving this wonderful house. We’re grateful to Sarah and Isha for their hospitality and for making our visit so special.
