Bunk+Brew Historic Lucas House - Hostel

The rooms were perfectly decent, though nothing extraordinary. What made the place stand out was the sauna, the food truck on site, and the people. They’ll often shuttle guests to the mountain in the “dirtbag express” van, too. Such a phenomenal spot.

Getting around was easy: Eugene and Mt Bachelor are a ten-minute walk to the bus stop, and there’s lots nearby to do. I had a great time, the atmosphere was fun, and the staff were great. I’ll definitely be back. Thanks! By the way, I left some Reese's ice cream for you in the freezer 👍

The sauna was nice, and the showers in that area were clean. The upstairs indoor shower didn’t work and wasn’t very clean either. People were friendly, but the place itself was pretty dirty, with some odd maintenance issues upstairs, including an open construction area, loose-looking pipes, and an outlet connected by old wires. At night you can hear every door opening and shutting, and I’m fairly sure staff and their friends were partying until 1am.

I’ve run a hostel for almost two decades and stayed in hundreds around the world, and Bunk and Brew is the kind of place Bend is lucky to have. It’s homey and clean by hostel standards, with a great location, building, staff, and vibe. I felt included and welcome. The staff were friendly and professional when I arrived, and they actually chatted with guests instead of staying distant like work-exchange staff at some other hostels. I think the work-exchange setup serves guests and the community well. I stayed in a coed dorm this past weekend. There was a snorer, but that’s dorm life, not the hostel’s fault. The room had a storage locker and an easy door-code security system. I’m glad this place is thriving, and I’ll be back. The world, especially America, needs more hostels like it.
