Howard Johnson by Wyndham Berkeley

The hotel is right in the middle of the city, which made it convenient for getting around and doing things. I also loved the breakfast, especially the hours it was served. The staff were polite and helpful, and when I had a small problem, one staff member handled it with real grace, charm, and professionalism. She’s a credit to the organization. My stay was comfortable and pleasant, with good hospitality. I’d definitely stay again if I travel there.

The room next door played loud music through the night, so we barely got the few hours of sleep we’d booked the room for. Staff called the neighboring room, and I didn’t need to tell them which one, so I assume someone else had complained too. Around 1:30am they offered us a different room, and it was much quieter.

Room 123 has a few quirks. The bathroom light flickers for around 45 minutes, so switch it on as soon as you arrive and leave it on until checkout. The porch light strobes constantly. The shower control is confusing: it turns on, then off, then on again, and it can take at least five minutes to get the temperature right. The walls and doors are thin, so the sound of the next door unit 122 opening can make you think someone’s trying your door. Parking is awkward if you have an SUV, as it seems to be for any unit you rent. Avoid the right corner two spaces to the right of the vending and ice machine. We slept on top of the blankets in our sweats. Still, it was a decent place to crash for the price. Just turn on that bathroom light right away.

Free parking and a clean room, with BART about a 10 minute walk away. The walls are a bit thin, but for this price it’s a good deal. I’d stay here again next time I’m in the area.
