Big Bear Hostel

Just remember, this is a HOSTEL, not a hotel. If you want more, you need to PAY more! I’ve stayed about half a dozen times, and it works for me. I’m pretty active and love hiking the mountains and valleys around the lake, so spending extra on a room feels like a waste. The owners are great. He’s high energy, she’s very sweet, and they both keep the place clean and secure. It has a homey feel and can fit two large groups while still leaving room for individuals. The Village is a block away, the FREE buses go to shopping and the slopes, and the lake is a short walk. The price is hands-down the BEST deal in town!

The Blue bus runs free once an hour, so getting to Vons or StaterBros was easy, and Big Bear Village with its restaurants was only a five-minute walk. The Knickerbocker stop was right by Big Bear Hostel after I arrived on the Big Mountain Bus. I booked two nights on a whim and had a great time. Sarge was so accommodating, and the female-only bunk worked perfectly for me. There’s a kitchen too, and the fall foliage was lovely. Desi also works at the nearby GetBoard kayak rentals. I’m already looking forward to coming back for more hikes.

The dryer was the one frustrating part: it runs slowly, struggles with a big load, overheats, and stops. Apart from that, this was a clean, quiet hostel with lots of room, a full kitchen, and an easy walk to downtown restaurants and shops. We were hiking the PCT and reached town ahead of schedule, but Sarge was really responsive and friendly and had the full eight-bed bunk room ready for us. I’d stay here again.

The only thing I wished for was a streaming account logged in on the TV, so I could watch a movie or show. Otherwise, the simple amenities covered what I needed, and everything from the room to the common spaces and bathroom was very clean. John and Desi are kind, accommodating owners. The location is near the city’s hot spots but still quiet and peaceful. Check-in and checkout were easy. Management wasn’t always there in person, but replied to my texts quickly every time. I really enjoyed my stay and hope to return.
