Holiday Inn Express Detroit-Birmingham by IHG

The main reason for my one-star review is that I was charged for the room twice. I paid with a debit card, which I’ve since learned was a mistake. When I called twice in the days after my one-night stay for a friend’s wedding, two different people said their records showed just one charge. They said the “night auditor” would call to discuss it, but no one did. The second man gave me the hotel manager Terri’s email. She said the second charge was a “temporary hold” that would drop off within 10 business days. Seeing the full stay amount held was a bit shocking, but I took management at their word. After 10 business days, the charge was still posted to my bank account. I emailed Terri again for an update and got no response. My bank reviewed my dispute and ruled in my favor, so I got the money back, but Holiday Inn Express didn’t help. The room itself was fine, a decent place to sleep for a night, though the A/C unit was incredibly loud, blasting for three minutes, stopping for a few, then starting again. That’s nitpicking, though. Customer service was almost nonexistent. I suggest using a credit card, as I should have, and watching any charges from the hotel closely.

We come back every time we’re in town. The rooms are affordable and clean, and it’s only a five-minute walk to beautiful downtown Birmingham, with its great shopping and restaurants. Highly recommend.

The lobby staff and the cleaners were both awesome. Hospitality here is the best around the area. I highly recommend the hotel.

We were in town for a Lions game and stayed in a clean, comfortable king room on the top floor. Traffic noise was noticeable, but not enough to spoil it. Kroger, Sweetgreen, Starbucks, and the downtown Birmingham businesses are all close and walkable. The Uber ride downtown cost around $30-40, depending on the time of day. The staff were very friendly, and I’d stay again.
