Econo Lodge Blackwell - I-35

For a budget hotel, this turned out to be one of my best stays. We found a good rate by booking online through Priceline's link from Google Maps, and the desk staff were extremely nice. The free breakfast was one of the best I've had. Our room was pleasant and the mattress was adequate, though it wasn't luxury quality. The bathroom door swung in a slightly odd way, but it worked. We heard some pipe banging and other noises from outside overnight. I think I slept through most of it. I could probably give it four stars, since there's always room to improve, but I had a really good experience.

Getting to the interstate was easy, and the food right next door was a real convenience while traveling. The room was clean and comfortable, honestly a 5/5, and the service was decent, about an 8/10. But a really strong marijuana smell from upstairs at one far end of the building made it hard to relax in the room. That isn't acceptable in a hotel. If they can sort that out, this could be a great place. As things stand, I wouldn't stay again.

The property needs work on cleanliness and how guests are treated. The lobby carpet was visibly dirty, and the floors throughout looked like they needed a thorough vacuum and maintenance. I also saw the night clerk smoking what appeared to be marijuana right outside the entrance, which felt inappropriate. The front desk was hit or miss. The morning employee who checked us out was rude and wouldn't pass along our concerns to a manager when we asked. The night employee was friendly, but so loud it disturbed people in the lobby. The manager herself was kind, but her professionalism was lacking. She often seemed disengaged and was outside smoking when guests needed help, with little urgency about coming back in. When she did help, there were often excuses or complaints about other staff. Her clothing also struck me as unprofessional and made a poor first impression. I wouldn't stay here again.

We had a really nice stay and will be back. The staff were polite and well trained, and breakfast was a nice hot continental spread. The pool was nice, the shower was fabulous, and I even got to meet the management. Thanks for taking good care of us!
